Theoretical considerations on colliding clumped winds

چکیده

First attempts are made to derive astrophysical implications of the collision of clumped stellar winds from order of magnitude estimates and preliminary numerical simulations. Compared to colliding smooth winds, we find that the most significant differences occur in widely separated systems like WR 140. Clumped winds de-stabilize the wind-wind interaction zone of such systems. Highly compressed, cold knots of WRwind material can form. Hydrogen rich material is likely to be mixed into these knots by the excited turbulence. Such knots, therefore, are good candidates to form dust. We briefly discuss to what degree our results can be applied to other systems and look at different possibilities for the origin and nature of the inhomogeneities in hot star winds.

Theory of thermal and ionization effects in colliding winds of WR+O binaries

The colliding winds interaction zone in WR+O binaries is a highly complex environment. In this review we summarize the progress made towards its theoretical understanding during the last years. We review the effect of different physical processes on the interaction zone, among them geometry and orbital motion, radiative forces, thermal conduction, instabilities and turbulence, ionizing radiatio...

Properties of Hot , Massive Stars : The Impact of FUSE Paul

The impact of FUSE upon the fundamental parameters of OB stars and Wolf-Rayet stars is reviewed. The stellar wind signatures available in the far-UV provide us with important additional diagnostics of effective temperature. Together with improved non-LTE stellar atmosphere models allowing for line blanketing and stellar winds, this has led to a downward revision in the spectral type-temperature...

The X-ray Spectra of Symbiotic Stars

Symbiotic stars are thought to show distinct X-ray emission from the accreting object and from the colliding winds of the two stars. I show that the colliding wind component is unnecessary. Instead, the spectra can be interpreted as emission only from the compact object that is strongly absorbed by the partially-ionised wind of the red giant. There remains no evidence of any X-ray emission from...

Clumping in the winds of O-type CSPNs

Recent studies of massive O-type stars present clear evidences of inhomogeneous and clumped winds. O-type (H-rich) central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNs) are in some ways the low mass–low luminosity analogous of those massive stars. In this contribution, we present preliminary results of our on-going multi-wavelength (FUV, UV and optical) study of the winds of Galactic CSPNs. Particular emp...

Clumping effects on non-thermal particle spectra in massive star systems

Observational evidence exists that winds of massive stars are clumped. Many massive star systems are known as non-thermal particle production sites, as indicated by their synchrotron emission in the radio band. As a consequence they are also considered as candidate sites for non-thermal high-energy photon production up to gamma-ray energies. The present work considers the effects of wind clumpi...
